“We love Him because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
Here’s some fantastic news for you today: God says to you, "I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness I have drawn you." (Jeremiah 31:3) But that’s not all; God loves you just as much on your bad days as He does on your good ones! His love for you isn’t measured by your actions, but by His nature! God’s acceptance of you is based on your position, not your condition, "for He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (II Corinthians 5:21)
I don’t know about you, but I’ve made quite a few mistakes, and still do. However, my "position" as a child of God covers my condition. Remember that it was at Calvary that God took every sin that would ever be committed and laid it upon His Son. Therefore, when you go to the cross as a sinner, He takes all of Christ’s righteousness and wraps you up in it. From that point on, your Heavenly Father can only see you one way, as His child, because of His Son’s willingness to die for you!
Forget about the achievement based value system of this world; it doesn’t apply to Christians. Because Jesus died for you, your worth isn’t based on what you do, but on Who you belong to – as a Christian, you belong to Jesus! God actually assigned enough value to you and me, to sacrifice "His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John3:16). Now don’t get it twisted in thinking that God doesn’t care about what you do; He does! Your loving Heavenly Father wants you to live right and do good works; however, He wants you to do them out of gratitude and love rather than as a useless and needless attempt to earn His love. As a matter of fact, you’ll never be good enough to earn His love.
Understanding your position through Jesus can get you off the performance/acceptance treadmill, and get you doing the right things for the right reasons. The plain truth is that, you’re going to have good days and bad days, but God loves you the same every day. That’s something to get excited about!
